Manchester United had been linked with former Red Memphis Depay in the winter transfer window but ultimately ended their pursuit of the forward.
Depay has been keen to leave Barcelona this month with several clubs showing interest in signing the 28-year-old.
United had seemingly thrown their names into the mix to oversee Depay’s return to Old Trafford after his underwhelming spell came to an end in 2017, however, the club made no concrete offer and instead opted to sign Burnley striker Wout Weghorst on a six-month loan spell.
United were not prepared to meet Depay’s demands
The Athletic has since reported that the reasons the Red Devils ended their pursuit of Depay was due to the player wanting a long-term deal and with the club being strapped for cash, United could not cater to his demands and offer such a contract.
Now, Depay is close to joining La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.
