Owen Hargreaves believes Manchester United can win silverware this season

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargeaves believes Erik ten Hag’s side could win the Premier League, but he stresses that a top four finish and a trophy would be a success for the club this season.

Manchester United are still in four competitions, unlike any other club in the Premier League, and things appear to be going to plan for new manager Erik ten Hag. The Reds are showing great form and we’ve reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

That helps explain why Hargreaves sounds optimistic about United winning a trophy in Ten Hag’s first season, but as for the Premier League, he says it’s merely a possibility ahead of a big clash with Man City at Old Trafford.

I would advise against getting too excited because there is still a lot of football to play, and our main objective this season is to qualify for the Champions League. Anything else would be a bonus.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Hargreaves said: “It’s possible, but I think if Manchester United can win a trophy and finish in the top four, I think that’s a very good season.

“Could they win the league not scoring as many goals as the other top teams? Probably not based on the body of work so far. But they are in a great place, they are the only team left in all four competitions.

“It looks like they can win a trophy. It feels like they are in a good place where they can go and win something.”

Hargreaves played for both United and City during his career – but it was under Sir Alex Ferguson that he won the Premier League and Champions League double, back in 2008. The former England international was terrific that season.
