Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Wout Weghorst on loan for the remainder of the season.

The news was confirmed this morning by Fabrizio Romano, who reported that the striker will make his way to Manchester today to complete all necessary medical tests and sign his contract.

Weghorst is a Burnley player but has spent the first half of the 2022/2023 campaign on loan at Besiktas. United will pay the club £2.5 million in compensation to terminate his season-long loan spell in the Turkish Super Lig prematurely.

The Clarets had included an option to buy in their agreement with Besiktas, which would have seen the Dutchman make the permanent switch for around €10 million. According to The Athletic, this is why the Reds were forced to pay a compensation package.

How could Weghorst play in the Manchester derby?

To face Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday, United will need to have Weghorst fully registered by midday on Friday, January 13.

Fans will be keen for the striker to feature, as there’s no better way for you to introduce yourself to a new club than scoring a goal against one of their biggest rivals – just ask Anthony Martial!
