Lisandro Martinez speaks out after winning World Cup with Argentina

Manchester United have had a winner from the two last World Cups and this year, it was Lisandro Martinez and Argentina who won the storied tournament.

Martinez played a key role for Argentina in their run to the final and has now tattooed his name into football history after his nation’s latest triumph.

Argentina’s historic win in Qatar comes just 18 months after Martinez helped them to the Copa America crown in 2021, beating Brazil in the final.

Players that reached the last week of fixtures in the World Cup are slowly being brought back to club football and although Raphael Varane has featured in both of United’s league games, Martinez is yet to play.

The 24-year-old has, however, returned to Carrington and has been in training with the side for the best part of a week. Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s league game against Bournemouth, in which he could make his return, Martinez explained what it was like to win the World Cup.

“To be honest, it’s a unique feeling,” Martinez is quoted as saying on the official Manchester United website.

“There is joy. I want to enjoy every second because being a world champion is the ultimate in football.

“But we’ve celebrated it now, finished all the partying. Now I’m focused here in Manchester and I’ll be working towards [the Bournemouth match] giving my all and getting everything ready for [today’s] game.”

SN’s verdict…
Martinez has already become a fan-favourite at Old Trafford and chants of ‘Argentina! Argentina!’ can be heard at every single game. He wasted no time in endearing himself to supporters by picking fights with the opposition and inviting the crowd to get involved.

It has also helped that he has, undeniably, been one of the best signings in the Premier League. Erik ten Hag’s gamble has been successful and he’ll now be hoping that his star defender is fully rested ahead of a busy schedule.
