Newcastle join Man United in pursuit of Ligue 1 star but price could put clubs off

It’s no secret that Erik ten Hag is keen on adding another right-back to his squad despite the recent resurgence made by Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the last two games.

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported that Inter were hoping that Manchester United would follow through on their interest in Denzel Dumfries to spark a bidding war.

Diogo Dalot is the first-choice player at right-back and the young star’s stellar performances over the last six months, which has also won him a permanent place in the Portugal side, makes any immediate high-value move for a right-back unlikely.

Earlier this season, it was revealed that United had made an inquiry for exciting Olympique Lyon right-back Malo Gusto. The 19-year-old has taken Ligue 1 by storm and is now being courted by some of Europe’s elite clubs.

Now, it’s being claimed that Newcastle have joined United in the race to sign Gusto from the French giants. That’s according to the Daily Mail, who add that Lyon’s asking price could be a problem.

As per the report, United retain an interest in the promising Frenchman but any bids are expected to be put on hold until the summer due to Lyon’s high asking price.

It’s stated that Lyon are asking for £35m to part ways with Gusto in the January transfer window.

SN’s verdict…
Undeniably, Gusto is one of Europe’s most promising prospects in his position but any move for him is likely to depend on Dalot’s future at Old Trafford.

Dalot’s contract was recently extended by one season, which means he will stay at the club for at least another 18 months. If there is no indication that he will sign a long-term deal, it’s plausible that United will begin to scour the market for other alternatives.
