Sunderland boss doesn’t want to lose Manchester United loanee

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray believes that Erik ten Hag won’t recall Amad Diallo from his loan spell because the winger is enjoying his football at the Stadium of Light.

It would be a completely different story if Amad wasn’t getting games at Sunderland.

The forward has managed five goals for the Black Cats this season and has become a regular under Mowbray.

There were suggestions that United could recall Amad in January, although that does not seem like a good idea, even if Erik ten Hag is lacking in the attacking department. That is why the club should be going into the transfer market to find a new goalscorer because Amad isn’t ready to fill that void.

We shouldn’t overlook the fact that Facundo Pellistri has yet to make his competitive debut for the club and was an unused substitute in Wednesday night’s 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Burnley.

Mowbray is confident that his loanee will remain at Sunderland.

“I’m pretty sure that’s something that’s not even been questioned,” Mowbray told reporters, as per the Manchester Evening News. “I think they [United] are happy.

“On the back of Amad’s loan last season [at Rangers], I think it’s such a better position for him and for his football club at this moment that he stays [at Sunderland] and plays his football with a smile on his face. Hopefully he will keep scoring and creating chances for us.

“I haven’t heard that from Erik ten Hag’s voice, I’m just assuming that that’s the case with his football club because there haven’t been any rumours that they might be doing this and this. My experience tells me he is in a really good place, so leave him, let him enjoy his football, and let him grow and develop.

“Otherwise, what’s he doing? He could go back to Manchester United and maybe not even get on their bench.

“He’s a young guy who’s had a tough period, he’s now found a bit of form and somewhere where he is settled and looking happy, so I would just let him keep going.”

Sunderland host Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day when Amad will be looking to add to his tally for the season.

After enduring a difficult loan spell at Rangers last season, when he played very little football, it’s good to finally see Amad get a run of games under his belt.

You could argue that he’s been one of the most exciting players in the Championship this season.
