Benfica striker emerges as Erik ten Hag’s priority target

There are a lot of names doing the rounds when it comes to which forward Manchester United will sign next. It remains to be seen if Erik ten Hag will have the funds to buy a top player in January and he needs someone with an eye for goal who can also lead the attacking line.

I’m happy to see Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer at the club because of how he behaved during his second spell at Manchester United. There’s no denying that he left under a grey cloud, but I think the manager will be relieved to move on – even if it means he has one less striker.

According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has ‘chosen’ Goncalo Ramos as his number one transfer priority, despite Benfica signalling that they will not part ways with the player unless his €120million release clause is triggered.

Ramos burst onto the scene at the World Cup after replacing Ronaldo in the Portugal line-up during the latter stages of the tournament. He scored a wonderful hat-trick in the 6-1 win over Switzerland and that has added millions beyond millions to his price tag.

United have also been linked with Cody Gakpo and I don’t think Ten Hag will have the money available to sign both players. On another note, I don’t think we’ll be splashing over £100m on a player at a time when the Glazers are listening to investors about potential bids to sell the club.

Ten Hag will still be keen to sign a new striker in the January transfer window because he would be naive to rely on Anthony Martial given the Frenchman’s fitness record.
