While Manchester United have triggered 12-month extensions in four Manchester United players, David de Gea appears to be the odd one out due to his current salary which makes him the highest paid goalkeeper in the world.
According to The Athletic, Manchester United are in talks with David de Gea over a new deal but it is believed that the club would like him to agree to a lower salary, as per The Sun.
You can take nothing away from the Spaniard’s 11-year spell at Manchester United because he’s been a terrific servant to the club, but triggering a one-year extension at £375,000-a-week would be ridiculous.
That deal was agreed back in September 2019 and De Gea has gone on record to say he would be open to reducing his wages to stay at United.
I have heard fans argue this season that the modern game – or what is demanded of goalkeepers these days – is not something De Gea can master at this stage of his career. He’s 32-year-old and I think we should all let Erik ten Hag be the judge of that.
The Dutchman has been asking De Gea to come off his line this season and we’ve even seen him play out from the back at times. This was non-existent other different managers and the reason he lost his place in Luis Enrique’s Spain squad.
This might put the Diogo Costa rumours to bed for another while.
