Manchester United remain interested in Diogo Costa despite new contract

Diogo Costa didn’t have the best World Cup for Portugal this winter, but that doesn’t change the fact he has been one of Europe’s most impressive goalkeepers this season for FC Porto shirt.

As soon as Erik ten Hag was appointed Manchester United manager, we heard analysts claim that it wouldn’t be long before he searched for a new goalkeeper. Their thought process stemmed from David de Gea’s reluctance to come off his line as well not being renowned for playing from the back.

De Gea hasn’t been faultless this season, but he has took Ten Hag’s coaching on board. The problem is he doesn’t warrant being the highest paid keeper in the world. Those days are gone.

That means Ten Hag has a decision to make at the end of the season when the Spaniard’s contract expires.

The Dutchman could opt to trigger a 12-month extension in De Gea’s deal, while reports from Portuguese publication A Bola (via Manchester Evening News) claim that United are still keen on Costa as a possible replacement for our current No. 1, who had a long break this December after missing out on a call-up for the Spain squad.

However, Costa signed new terms with FC Porto last month and it’s thought he now has a release clause of around £64 million.

It’s a lot of money for a goalkeeper.
