90 minutes, injury time and extra time were not enough to separate France and Argentina at the Lusail Stadium.

In one of the most tantalising World Cup finals in history, the Argentines took a 2-0 lead against France in the first half through a Lionel Messi penalty and an Angel Di Maria strike.

Les Bleus were then awarded a penalty in the minute, which was swiftly converted by Kylian Mbappe. Just 90 seconds later, the 23-year-old produced one of the finest volleys on the biggest stage to dramatically make it 2-0 with just 10 minutes of regular time left.

Extra time saw Messi produce yet another moment of magic with a goal that all players thought had swung the tie in the Argentines’ favour before Didier Deschamps’ side were awarded the third penalty of the match. Mbappe converted the spot-kick and became the second player in history to score a hat trick in a World Cup final.

The penalty shootout then ended 4-2 after misses from both Aurelien Tchouameni and Kingsley Coman. Argentina etched their name in the history books of football as world champions.

Reds in the final

Lisandro Martinez will return to Old Trafford as a World Cup winner. He made five appearances across the seven matches.

Commiserations to Raphael Varane, who fell short on the night in his pursuit to lift back-to-back trophies.
