Manchester United academy coach gives update on Teden Mengi injury

Thankfully it doesn’t sound like Teden Mengi’s injury is as bad as what was feared when the defender was taken off on a stretcher during a mid-season friendly in Spain last week.

The 20-year-old sustained an injury in the first-half of United’s friendly against La Liga outfit Real Betis and he looked visibly in discomfort as he left the pitch on a stretcher.

It came as a blow for Mengi because he has had serious injuries in the past. Being a young footballer, spending long periods away from the training ground doesn’t benefit anyone’s development and he will be fully aware of that.

Mengi only returned from injury in October and the latest setback came less than two months later.

Manchester United academy coach Travis Binnion was asked about Mengi after the U21s’ match against Bolton on Tuesday night. He wasn’t able to give a proper diagnosis yet but at least the injury doesn’t seem as bad as first feared.

“I haven’t got an update [diagnosis] on that,” Binnion told the Manchester Evening News. “I don’t think it’s as bad as maybe what was first feared, or what it looked like, so that’s positive. He’s had a couple of injuries before, so he knows what he’s got to do.

“He’s got the mental strength to deal with it and come back from it, so he’ll be fine, but it’s disappointing for him.”

We hope Mengi has a speedy recovery!
