Manchester United considering move for Barcelona star

Manchester United are considering a move for Barcelona star Memphis Depay, according to reports. Erik ten Hag is currently a striker short after Cristiano Ronaldo abruptly put an end to his return to the club last month.

The 37-year-old left the club just 15 months after sealing a magical return to Old Trafford in 2021 and now, Ten Hag is keen on replacing the Portuguese forward.

As things stand, Anthony Martial is the only out-and-out striker at the club and the Frenchman’s injury history means it is far from certain that he will be able to stay fit for the remainder of the season.

That could mean United are planning to enter the January transfer market – something they rarely do but it feels like this situation is rather alarming for Ten Hag.

Now, it is being claimed that the club is considering a move for Barcelona star Memphis Depay, who starred for the Netherlands at this winter’s World Cup.

That’s according to Spanish publication Sport, via Sport Witness, who say that Depay, who left United in 2017 just 18 months after Louis van Gaal signed him, is after more minutes following a challenging 12 months under manager Xavi Hernandez.

It is, however, claimed that Barcelona are unlikely to let Depay leave on a free transfer this January despite his contract expiring next summer and his seemingly nonexistent role in the first team.

Jose Mourinho’s Roma are claimed to have tried to sign Depay, with United said to be ‘thinking about it’.

SN’s verdict…
Depay has developed into a neat player since his departure from Old Trafford nearly six years ago and perhaps crucially, he’s now used to playing as a striker.

Additionally, any move for Depay is likely to be on the cheap side due to his expiring contract – he has just six months left on his deal at Spotify Camp Nou.
