Rio Ferdinand is a fan of Netherlands wing-back amid Manchester United links

Denzel Dumfries is one of the many right-backs out there being linked with a move to Manchester United.

Thanks to Diogo Dalot’s rise to prominence this season, the need for a right-back may be settled by someone signed for cover, which could see Dumfries overlooked as Inter Milan will demand a big transfer fee for his signature in the summer.

The Portuguese full-back has been used almost exclusively by Erik ten Hag this season, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been both injured and overlooked since the beginning of the season.

As a result, Dumfries has been tipped as a potential target.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has said the Netherlands wing-back is a “breath of fresh air” following his performances at the World Cup.

Ferdinand singled Dumfries out for praise ahead of their quarter-final defeat against Argentina on Friday night. He said (via BBC Sport H/t Manchester Evening News): “He’s integral, just like Daley Blind, to the way that Louis van Gaal works.

“They’re the outlet that get beyond, and he’s a player you look at and think that he’s athletic, can beat people one-on-one. It’s not just about being there, it’s the quality.

“He’s not putting balls in willy-nilly, he’s picking people out, those cutbacks have been ever so dangerous. He doesn’t mind working at the other end of the pitch, as well. He’s been a breath of fresh air for them and a very important player.”

Another right-back who has impressed at the World Cup this winter is Croatia’s Josip Juranović.
