Man United star named as World Cup player of the group stage

Manchester United have a number of players in stellar form at this winter’s World Cup and Bruno Fernandes has showcased his world-class talents on the biggest stage.

Fernandes has become Portugal’s main man at this tournament and has earned the praise of onlookers worldwide. The 28-year-old assisted two goals in their opening game against Ghana before following that up with a brace against Uruguay in the second game.

Crucially, he was rested for the final game against South Korea as manager Fernando Santos looks to maintain Fernandes’ condition ahead of their round-of-16 game against Switzerland on Tuesday.

With two goals and two assists in just two games, Fernandes has now been named the player of the group stage by the statistical website WhoScored, as seen above.

Fernandes has fended off competition from Wojciech Szczesny, Theo Hernandes and Lionel Messi to accumulate the highest ranking, with United midfielder Casemiro placing fourth.

United are the only club to have two players feature in WhoScored’s top five ranked players and if Portugal are to improve on their round-of-16 exit in 2018, Fernandes will need to be at his brilliant best once again.
