Pablo Zabaleta tips Argentina starlet to leave Benfica amid Manchester United links

Former Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta predicts Argentina and Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez will move to a bigger club next summer. This comes after the former River Plate starlet was linked with a transfer to Manchester United.

The 21-year-old has impressed at the World Cup and you can already tell he will be a key player for Argentina for the foreseeable future. Enzo scored against Mexico and registered an assist against Poland as La Albiceleste qualified for the round of 16.

Zabaleta, who earned 58 caps for Argentina, has given a verdict on Fernandez’s future. He told BBC Sport, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News: “He’s been really good in both games, he’s been one of the best players for Argentina. He’s only 21 but he’s been fantastic and I think next summer, he will go to a big club. He’s got vision, his passing and shooting ability is great. He can play as a number four but also as a number eight.”

Benfica won’t want to lose Fernandez anytime soon because they only signed him in the summer. The young midfielder has three goals and five assists to his name in 24 appearances for the Portuguese outfit. Moreover, he has been linked with a move to Manchester City as well as United, as per the MEN.

After signing Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the summer, Erik ten Hag could still opt to bolster his midfield in the coming year. There is still room for improvement and Donny van de Beek’s days at Old Trafford are surely numbered.

I think it would be a good idea for United to explore a move for Fernandez in the summer. We should have signed him in the summer to avoid having to pay more 12 months later.

Hopefully the next owners – whoever they are – are willing to spend the money to see United compete again. Ten Hag deserves significant backing in the transfer window next summer.
