Cristiano Ronaldo is a free agent for the first time in his career following his shameful exit from Manchester United earlier this week.

The club announced that a mutual agreement to end Ronaldo’s contract seven months early had been reached and he is now free to join any other club. It’s not believed that Ronaldo will be paid any compensation for the remainder of his contract.

Just 48 hours after Ronaldo was let go by United, the 37-year-old is leading his nation in their World Cup opener against Ghana. Ahead of the game, Ronaldo could be seen breaking down in tears as Portugal’s national anthem is played, as seen below.

Ronaldo’s involvement in the game means that he has now played in five different World Cups but he has dropped out of the large list of United players to feature in Qatar.

Ronaldo’s tears will be interpreted in many different ways but it is unlikely to have anything to do with his Old Trafford exit – that masterplan was executed to perfection by his team.
