Rio Ferdinand plays down speculation that United could sign Jude Bellingham

Long-term Manchester United target Jude Bellingham scored in England’s 6-2 win over Iran at the 2022 World Cup on Monday.

The Three Lions started their World Cup campaign with a comfortable win and Bellingham earned praise from commentators throughout the game. For a 19-year-old, he certainly didn’t fold on the big occasion and it looks like he will embark on a solid run in Gareth Southgate’s team.

Of course, United fans want those from Old Trafford to do well when they feature, but it’s also a chance to see some of our targets up close. Bellingham being one of them.

But Bellingham’s rise in popularity could rise after a strong World Cup campaign, which he started this week, and Rio Ferdinand has played down suggestions that United could lead the race for his signature this summer.

“Put yourself in Jude Bellingham’s shoes now,” Ferdinand said on FIVE, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “[Manchester] City are going to be in for him, Real Madrid probably be in for him, they are all going to be, Barca, Bayern will be in for him.

“There’s too much work to be done at United, its whether he thinks ‘you know what I can be the catalyst to pull this club back to where it should be’.

“That’s the only way he goes if he says that in his own mind, ‘I can be that guy’, if he think he can be that guy then Man United’s the club for him, but I don’t see him taking that decision.”

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder is hugely admired by United since his youth days at Birmingham City. Unfortunately, we missed out on him then and it could happen again next summer.

Bellingham is also being linked with moves to Liverpool and Man City.
