This winter’s World Cup in Qatar is officially underway and two Manchester United targets were in action on Monday as the Netherlands kicked off their campaign.
Louis van Gaal’s men are favourites to win their group but faced fierce competition from Senegal, who were recently crowned champions of Africa.
Cody Gakpo and Frenkie de Jong were both heavily linked with moves to United over the past summer but the pair ended up staying at their clubs despite intense speculation.
They were both named in Van Gaal’s first line-up of the tournament and they combined in brilliant fashion to score the winner late in the game.

De Jong held his cross and Gakpo timed his run to perfection before his deft touch put the ball past Edouard Mendy, who was caught in no man’s land.
The Netherlands scored a second goal in the dying embers of the game and will now face Ecuador and Qatar to decide their fate.
