Real Madrid legend claims Cristiano Ronaldo can still play at the top

Cristiano Ronaldo finds himself in the middle of a media storm right now. His interview with Piers Morgan burnt all bridges at Old Trafford, there is no way back at Manchester United, and once Portugal’s World Cup ends he will be on the lookout for a new club.

Rumours about a blockbuster return to Real Madrid have been dismissed by Fabrizio Romano, as per Caught Offside, and it remains to be seen where Ronaldo could move next. His focus right now is on the World Cup as he looks to win the major tournament before retiring.

The 37-year-old goes into the World Cup lacking in form but hardly confidence. Ronaldo has enough confidence to go around, even when he isn’t performing well or scoring goals.

Portugal will just have to put up with his on-field strops.

Real Madrid legend backs Cristiano Ronaldo

Former Real Madrid teammate Iker Casillas seems to be of the opinion that Ronaldo can still play at the very top of the game, contrary to widespread belief that he is past it.

“When people talk about Cris they forget what he has done,” the retired goalkeeper told Marca. “Come on, he doesn’t forget, because he knows what he’s done. But I would always like him on my team. Cristiano still has rope to play at the highest level.”

It was only a matter before some of Ronaldo’s friends from his time at the Santiago Bernabeu came out to defend his questionable interview. Casillas hasn’t defended anything – but he is giving Ronaldo exactly what he wants in his search for a new club.

After leaving Real Madrid, Casillas spent his final years playing at a high standard for FC Porto — between 2015-2020 — in the Champions League.

Ronaldo will have a chance to score some goals in the group stages, with Portugal drawn against Uruguay, Ghana and South Korea.
