Iran fans mock Harry Maguire before kick-off in Qatar

England face Iran in their World Cup opening match in Qatar with two Manchester United players named in the starting lineup.

Iran supporters were pictured outside the Khalifa International Stadium holding signs mocking Harry Maguire, who starts the game alongside Luke Shaw.

The signs read “It’s not coming home because of Harry Maguire” and “Harry Maguire your defence is terrifying”.

It’s no secret that Maguire has fallen down the pecking order at club level since the appointment of Erik ten Hag, but his form has rarely waivered for his national side, hence why Gareth Southgate continues to reinstate his faith in the centre-back.

Why Maguire deserves more respect

He was named in the Euro 2020 Team of the Tournament after being part of a backline that consisted just two goals throughout the campaign. The 29-year-old was also invaluable during the Three Lions’ World Cup run in 2018, that saw them reach the semi-final.

Hopefully, Maguire is able to use this tournament to build his confidence and prove to doubters why Southgate utilises him as a starter.
