Wayne Rooney gives verdict on Harry Maguire’s form

Wayne Rooney has given his view on why Harry Maguire appears to play better for England than he does for Manchester United.

The all-time top goalscorer for Manchester United raises a valid argument that United have struggled without protection in midfield, which was true before Casemiro came along in the summer.

In an article for The Times, Rooney explained: “He has performed better for England than he has for United — I think he would agree — and over the last couple of years United have struggled.

“He hasn’t had much protection and it is no coincidence that now there is more stability in the middle of the pitch with Casemiro, United’s defenders are playing better. With England, he has always had that protection.”

It remains to be seen if Maguire will be given a long run in the team after the World Cup, but he should look to build his confidence in Qatar by performing at his best.

Unlike a lot of other players at the competition, the United skipper won’t need to worry about fatigue because he has not played a lot of football this season.

Some reports suggest that Erik ten Hag may look to bolster his defence by selling Maguire and signing a new defender to challenge with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.
