Three Manchester United players included in England’s World Cup squad

Gareth Southgate has called up three Manchester United players to represent the Three Lions at the forthcoming World Cup in Qatar.

England kick off their campaign on Monday, November 1 against Iran. They are in Group B alongside Iran, Wales and the United States.

There was intense speculation regarding which Red Devils would be making the journey and Southgate has included four reds, with one notable omission.

The Reds representing England are:

Harry Maguire

The club captain has fallen out of favour under Ten Hag this season, as well as suffered from an injury that kept him on the sidelines but will take on another major tournament with England. He has always played a crucial role for the team and is one of Southgate’s most trusted centre-backs to always be named in the squad.

Marcus Rashford

The 25-year-old’s form has fluctuated in recent seasons and has caused Southgate to omit him from call-ups in the past. However, the forward is in fine form in all competitions this year and has netted seven goals and contributed three assists for his club.

Luke Shaw

Shaw faced competition for the left-back position at United following the arrival of Tyrell Malacia over the summer. The defender utilised the lack of playing time to only improve his game and consequently forced his way back into United’s starting 11, and on to plane to Qatar.

One red misses out

Jadon Sancho has struggled to maintain form this season and has also sustained an injury in the lead-up to selection. The 22-year-old will likely be disappointed, but hopefully can use the situation to ensure it doesn’t happen next time around and boost his form.
