Manchester United interested in shock Memphis Depay return

Just like it was reported in the summer, Memphis Depay has been linked with a shock return to Manchester United.

The Netherlands international spent 18 months at Old Trafford earlier in his career but was unable to nail down a place in the starting line-up. However, after impressing football fans across Europe by starring in a prosperous PSV Eindhoven side, Depay flattered to deceive during his time in England.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo claims Depay is ready to ask for a free transfer from Barcelona after the World Cup. The report adds that United are among a list of clubs that would interested in sealing his signature.

Depay has no plans to extend his deal at the Nou Camp and he will be out of contract in the summer. It just feels unlikely that Barcelona will grant him a free transfer when they have spent the last year checking cushions for loose change.

That said, he may have an argument to put forward since he arrived at Barca on a free transfer in 2021 but quickly fell down the pecking order following the arrivals of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are two other Premier League clubs that could look to Depay as another attacking option for their squads.

Memphis Depay on a free would not be a bad deal to strike in January

United need to sign a forward in January and I don’t think the Glazers will be giving Erik ten Hag a big transfer kitty to get the level of player he wants.

Also, we must throw in the factor that it is always difficult to do business with European clubs in January because most of them are midway through their league campaigns. They will all aim to keep their best players until the end of the season.

That means United will have a smaller market to shop in for a new striker, but at least Depay would arrive with resale value for a year or two.
