Gareth Southgate considering Marcus Rashford ahead of World Cup selection

England manager Gareth Southgate has selection dilemmas ahead of naming his 26-man squad to travel to Qatar for the World Cup.

The headlines over the next 24 hours are likely to focus on three England players, two whom player for Manchester United.

Everyone has an option whether Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and James Maddison should go to the World Cup or not.

While I would be shocked if the United duo missed out, along with Jadon Sancho, Maddison looks destined to lose out on a spot on the plane.

According to The Telegraph, Ivan Tony and Tammy Abraham face nervous waits with Southgate considering recalls for Marcus Rashford and Callum Wilson. The report adds that Luke Shaw is likely to be first choice at left-back.

Southgate is still sweating on the fitness of several players. He will be asking himself if he should bring X amount of players if they’re carrying knocks. At least with Maguire, the Three Lions manager knows his preferred centre-back is fresh after missing out on lots of football this season.

Meanwhile, Alan Shearer has argued that Arsenal’s Ben White should be selected ahead of Maguire because the United skipper can’t get into Erik ten Hag’s side. The problem I have with that opinion is Maguire tends to be very good in an England shirt.

It doesn’t change the fact Maguire’s inclusion will be hugely controversial. The clickbait media will be all over it like a rash.

Hopefully every United player going to the World Cup can return injury free.
