Tony Cascarino argues Garnacho is ready for more regular role at United

A lot of people on social media have been discussing whether Alejandro Garnacho is ready for a regular starting place at Manchester United. We know that under Erik ten Hag, age isn’t a factor when naming his starting eleven, and he is prepared to use young players but it’s about whether they are ready or not.

Garnacho had to be put back a peg or two during the summer because of his attitude. It was briefed again by Bruno Fernandes during the week that the academy graduate is improving and that is why he is being rewarded with chances in the team.

To Garnacho’s credit, he is taking his chances and now people are wondering whether Jadon Sancho is under pressure to keep his place in the team. Anthony Elanga must be thinking he has been pushed down the pecking order.

The youngster started United’s final two Europa League group games, scoring in Thursday night’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad. Now there are calls for a more regular place in Ten Hag’s side.

Former Chelsea and Republic of Ireland star Tony Cascarino likes what he sees of the 18-year-old prospect, and feels that he can do things that Sancho hasn’t shown since arriving at Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

“Garnacho is ready to challenge anyone in that forward line,” Cascarino told talkSPORT. “Jadon Sancho was brought in to do a role at the football club and that was to get to bylines and make defenders feel uncomfortable.

“He’s not done that. Whether he’s played right or left, he’s not made full-backs be afraid of him. Garnacho is completely different.

“He’s scaring the life out of full-backs. He’s does a thing that very few wingers could do brilliantly – run across the line of a defender and try and get behind him and then the defender gets scared.

“All he wants to do is get to a position where he’s either going to set someone up or try and score himself. He’s dangerous. You could actually make a good case that he could play in the United team now.”
