(Video) Ian Hislop tears into Gary Neville over hypocritical stance on Qatar World Cup

Gary Neville came under the spotlight for his involvement in the World Cup later this month as a commentator, while presenting BBC television show ‘Have I Got News for You.’

The tournament will be controversially held in Qatar, which is something that has been widely criticised across the world due to the country’s record with human rights.

Lots of people have spoken out against Qatar hosting the event, while others such as David Beckham have taken on ambassadorial roles to promote the competition. It is something Eric Cantona has hit out at in the past.

However, Gary Neville had to take shots on television about the issue, and now everyone on social media is running around calling him a hypocrite.

Ian Hislop didn’t hold back from having a go, but it was someone else who first initiated the discussion by asking how much money Beckham was pocketing from the World Cup.

Neville defended himself against Hislop, who wasn’t having any of it, saying: “Yeah, I’m commentating. Well, you’ve got a choice, haven’t you? My view always have been that you either highlight the issues and challenges in these countries and speak about them, or you basically don’t say anything and stay back home and don’t go.

“And I think we should challenge them.”

Hislop hit back again by suggesting Neville could highlight the issues in Qatar by staying at home.

“There’s another option: you stay at home and highlight the abuses. You don’t have to go and take the Qatari’s money. I’m not trying to be tiresome, but it’s not a very good defence.”

Neville looked visibly shaken by the gruelling.
