Rio Ferdinand responds to Graeme Souness criticism of Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez

Rio Ferdinand has slammed Graeme Souness for his criticism of Manchester United summer signings Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.

The two players have been instrumental to United’s positive run of form lately. After Sunday’s 1-0 win against West Ham, the Reds are fifth in the Premier League table, above rivals Chelsea and Liverpool and only one point behind fourth-placed Newcastle with a game in hand.

They have overseen victories against league leaders Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in the opening half of the season and are looking to secure top spot in Group E of the Europa League when they take on Real Sociedad in Spain this Thursday.

However, the formal Liverpool midfielder has unsurprisingly weighed in on the current United squad on talkSPORT, again questioning Martinez’s suitability to the league and insisting Casemiro was ‘not a great player’.

Ferdinand responds to Souness’ criticism

The former Red responded to the comments on his Vibe with FIVE podcast on YouTube, he said: “Oh come on Graeme, man. He’s not watched the games.

He’s obviously not watching Martinez because one of his main attributes when you speak to anyone who knows the game is he’s great with the ball, he’ll take it anywhere, he can pass, he’s tenacious, aggressive, can defend.

“To say he can’t pass… and he called Casemiro a steady Eddie? He’s won five Champions Leagues bruv and been integral to all of them. He can’t be a steady Eddie.

United have been winning and Martinez is one of the best players in the team at the moment. Casemiro, since coming in the team, has been arguably the most important player.

“The two players he’s picked out are probably the worst two he could have picked [for criticism].”
