Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has been named in the BBC team of the week after his impressive performance against Chelsea on Saturday.
Casemiro was the only United player selected for the XI from the Premier League games that were played over the weekend. There’s no place for any West Ham or Bournemouth players as both teams scrap for points in the Monday night fixture.
BBC Sport team of the week: Henderson; Burn, Mings, Mykolenko; Xhaka, Casemiro, De Bruyne, Tielemans; Ings, Haaland, Awoniyi.
The Brazil international scored his first goal for United, scoring the stoppage-time equaliser at Stamford Bridge to cancel out a late Jorginho penalty. Casemiro now looks like a player who has settled quickly after initially struggling to take Scott McTominay out of the team.
Casemiro is now rightly winning plaudits from pundits within the game.
It comes as a relief to United fans that we finally have a solid defensive midfielder in the team. Someone to protect the back four and allow midfielders like Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes to have bigger impacts on games.
Writing his BBC Sport column, Garth Crooks explained his Casemiro selection:
“There’s no doubt Casemiro is a top class player. You don’t play for Real Madrid without being the finished article.
“The question is, can he impose those talents on Manchester United? Against Chelsea he certainly dug them out of a hole. If you’re going to score your first goal for Manchester United it might as well be against one of your top four rivals.”
Casemiro left Real Madrid in the summer because he wanted to experience a new challenge in the Premier League. He is already giving us something different in midfield which bodes well for the rest of the season.
