Erik ten Hag hopes to have Anthony Martial available when Manchester United take on Newcastle this weekend.
It’s still too soon for Ten Hag to confidentially say Martial will be fit enough to face the Magpies, but at least the manager was hopeful when he spoke to reporters on Thursday night.
Ten Hag spoke to reporters after United’s 1-0 win over Omonia in the Europa League and took questions on the game against Newcastle instead of hosting a separate press conference on Friday afternoon.
“Anthony Martial can be [fit] but we have to wait [to see] how it develops in the coming hours,” Ten Hag told reporters, as per ManUtd.com.
He added that skipper Harry Maguire would be unavailable for the match.
“Harry Maguire will not make this, but it doesn’t take long, I think.
Then, when asked if Maguire would be out for another couple of weeks, the manager said: “No, no, no. I think that next week he will be back in the team training or over the next week.”
Maguire joins Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Brandon Williams and Donny van de Beek on the injury list, while Martial is touch-and-go until kick-off on Sunday.
United will be without Scott McTominay due to suspension and Martin Dubravka is ineligible to play against Newcastle.
