Manchester United are being linked with a January move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney if Cristiano Ronaldo is sold.
We have seen Cristiano Ronaldo play the role as impact sub since Erik ten Hag’s arrival, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial both seen as preferred options up front, which has led to even more speculation about the 37-year-old’s future.
Ronaldo was linked with a move away from United in the summer, but a deal never materialised due to a lack of interest. His contract will expire in the summer unless a decision is made to activate a one-year extension.
It would be a surprise if he stayed at the club for another year once this season comes to an end.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, United will move for Toney as early as January if Ronaldo leaves the club.
Tony is having another excellent season in the Premier League and looks like the type of forward that could lead the line in Ten Hag’s side. At 26, his best years could be ahead of him and it gives the manager another versatile option in attack.
The Brentford striker earned his first call-up to the England squad last summer and whe will be in contention to make Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, despite not making his debut for the Three Lions yet.
One of the biggest concerns this season is whether Martial can stay fit because the Frenchman has been unable to get a run of games under his belt since the pre-season tour.
A new centre-forward is needed next summer.
