Anthony Martial has been ruled out of Manchester United’s Europa League clash with Omonia Nicosia at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
In the reverse fixture, Martial came off the bench to help United to a 3-2 win in Cyprus.
That performance saw the Frenchman named in the starting eleven against Everton on Sunday, but he only managed 29 minutes before having to be replaced due to an injury.
At this evening’s press conference, Erik ten Hag confirmed that Martial is touch-and-go for the league clash against Newcastle on Sunday, which rules him out of Thursday night’s game.
When asked about Martial’s fitness ahead of the game, Ten Hag told reporters (via Manchester Evening News): “Not today [Martial training], we will see how it develops for Sunday. Harry is out. And longer-term Donny van de Beek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.”
Meanwhile, Harry Maguire is still out injured, with time running out to prove himself before Gareth Southgate selects his England squad for the World Cup.
Some fans thought that Ten Hag might use the Europa League to rotate his squad, but when asked about it the Dutchman made it clear that his team is going out for the victory. That suggests Omonia will face a strong United side at Old Trafford.
“All out for the victory, first game is the most important,” Ten Hag added. “It’s Europe, it’s tough, we want to be No. 1 in the group.”
