Harry Maguire is confident he will prove his fitness before Gareth Southgate names his England squad for the World Cup.
After sustaining an injury in a Nations League match against Germany, Maguire has been ruled out of action for United – missing games against Manchester City, Omonia and Everton.
Maguire missed the opportunity to fill in for Raphael Varane at centre-back, but the Frenchman is expected to return to his role at centre-back this week.
However, according to ESPN, Maguire’s injury is only minor, and his recovery is going well.
The defender aims to make himself available for Erik ten Hag’s team before Southgate names his World Cup squad in 10 days.
United have three matches before the squad is announced – against Omonia, Newcastle and Tottenham.
Stretty News verdict – Maguire unlikely to get more minutes before England squad announcement
Unless Maguire is fit enough to play on Thursday night, I don’t think he will be in the frame to play against Newcastle or Tottenham. We need three points from all of these matches but there is no way Ten Hag will break up his preferred defensive partnership of Varane and Lisandro Martinez for those two league matches.
Hopefully we don’t suffer any fresh injuries between now and then.
With or without minutes on the pitch, I reckon Maguire knows he’s going to the World Cup. Southgate wouldn’t leave without him.
