Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak has been linked with a summer move to Manchester United, but it sounds like he could be set to stay put at the Wanda Metropolitano.
A report from Jeunes Footeux recently claimed that United will make a move for the Atleti goalkeeper, with David de Gea’s contract set to expire.
However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano says Atleti are working on securing a new deal with Oblak, so he won’t be leaving Madrid anything soon.
In a newsletter for Caught Offside, Romano wrote: “Atletico Madrid have been working to extend Oblak’s contract for a long time now. During the summer transfer window, talks were very advanced so Atletico Madrid remain optimistic.”
Oblak has been a key player under Diego Simeone for years and Romano adds that there has been no concrete interest in the keeper, despite reports suggesting that United are interested in the Slovenia international.
Stretty News verdict
Manchester United need to be trying to secure a replacement for De Gea next summer. It needs to be a goalkeeper that can play out from the back and one that is willing to come off his line.
These are important traits for the modern goalkeeper, and they have been spotted as weaknesses in De Gea’s game.
There is no denying that he is a fantastic shot stopper, but he is no longer the best in the world.
