Manchester United begin preparations for derby showdown

The international break is finally over and Manchester United have begun their preparations for this weekend’s mouthwatering derby against Manchester City, with Erik ten Hag chasing a fifth consecutive win in the Premier League.

Ten Hag has found a winning formula at Old Trafford, with wins over Liverpool and Arsenal significantly boosting morale over the last six weeks.

After games against Crystal Palace and Leeds were postponed, another stern test awaits Ten Hag as he experiences his first derby in Manchester.

Ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium, most of United’s international players have returned from action and they can be seen in training, as seen above.

Antony, United’s biggest signing of the summer, is hoping to keep his good form up after he enjoyed a dream start to life at United when he scored the opening goal in the 3-1 win over Arsenal.

Marcus Rashford, the other goalscorer in that win, was not spotted in training and there are doubts over whether he will be able to feature.

It has been reported that Cristiano Ronaldo, who has only started one league game this season and is without a goal from open play, could start in his place.

Jadon Sancho is a player to look out for this weekend. The 22-year-old scored in this fixture last season – his return to Manchester City after leaving the club in 2017.

Sancho was controversially left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for games against Italy and Germany and he will be hoping to continue his push for a place in the final World Cup squad.

Raphael Varane is enjoying his best period in a United shirt and he was rested for France’s 2-0 defeat to Denmark, which should mean that he is raring to go for the derby. Varane is yet to feature in this fixture, having missed both games due to injury last year.
