Man United still interested in forward, personal terms already agreed

Manchester United signed six players over the summer but a striker did not walk through the doors at Carrington, despite the departure of Edinson Cavani.

United are light in that area and have used Marcus Rashford, normally a left-sided winger, in that position, for the most part, this season.

Erik ten Hag was desperate to add attacking options to his side in the final weeks of the transfer window and he finally landed on Antony, the winger he signed at Ajax and has now made United’s second most expensive transfer of all time.

Cody Gakpo, the PSV forward, was another player heavily linked with a move to United but mainly as an alternative if their pursuit of Antony failed.

Gakpo has started the 2022/23 season in inspired form and according to reports, United maintain their interest in the Dutch international.

That’s according to Forbes, who add that personal terms had already even been agreed with the 23-year-old this summer but a formal bid was never lodged.

Gakpo is believed to have an understanding with PSV where if a respectable offer was to arrive, the Dutch giants would not stand in his way if he wanted to leave.

Gakpo currently has four years remaining on his contract at PSV and he is increasingly likely to be involved in the Netherlands squad for this winter’s World Cup, which could boost his price even more.

Thus far, he has preferred playing on the left-wing but he could also play as a traditional centre-forward, which is what Ten Hag will be looking for next summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who turns 38 in February, is out of contract next summer and Anthony Martial’s future at the club is also uncertain.
