Manchester United won the match 6-2 but Old Trafford witness the birth of a new hero – as debutant Rooney put three goals past Fenerbahce.

It was an instant reminder to everyone that United had just signed the real deal. Rooney was the world’s hottest talent and he proved to be an immediate hit at United in Europe’s biggest competition.
Rooney would go on to become United’s all-time record goalscorer.
