Manchester United eye Aston Villa goalkeeper as potential De Gea replacement

Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

According to Football Insider, the 30-year-old Argentine is on Manchester United’s radar amid doubts over David de Gea’s long-term future.

The Spaniard could see his current deal expire next summer unless the club decide to activate the option to extend his contract by a further year.

It has been reported that United’s recruitment team consider Martinez as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, after making a big impact at Villa Park following his 2020 move from Arsenal.

Current goalkeeper ranks at Manchester United

As things stand, David de Gea is first choice. I have my doubts over whether that will still be the case a year on from now, but Martin Dubravka has yet to make his debut as the back-up option – on loan from Newcastle United.

United let Dean Henderson leave the club on loan for Nottingham Forest in the summer and he will be hoping to prove himself at the City Ground.

De Gea is making mistakes and doesn’t fit the profile of keeper usually selected by Erik ten Hag. The new manager is known to prefer keepers that are comfortable with the ball at their feet and it remains to be seen if he will give Henderson a chance next season.

Meanwhile, Tom Heaton is third choice keeper.

Let us know in the comments section if you would like Martinez at United? It doesn’t sound like a bad shout when you see that we are being linked to Everton Jordan Pickford…

  1. Why would he leave one club that isn’t going to win something, where he resurrected his career and is loved by the supporters, to a club where he isn’t going win anything?
