Editorial: BVB gear up for Jude Bellingham saga with excessive asking price

Borussia Dortmund are gearing up for another transfer saga and they are set to make another huge profit on a young English player.

We are in the middle of an international break and that tends to mean more transfer speculation. Jude Bellingham is being tipped as a star who will be Europe’s most wanted next summer, and we know that Manchester United are long-term admirers of the 19-year-old England international.

Borussia Dortmund have set a €150 million price tag for Bellingham, according to a report from The Athletic, and it’s not like they are rookies when it comes to ensuring they maximise their profits on each talent.

If Bellingham is indeed a real target for United, it’s clear that we will face competition for his signature, with the likes of Liverpool likely to push boundaries to make a deal happen. It is an important year for the teenager and most of Europe’s big clubs will be monitoring his every move.

Bellingham is still a prospect. A very exciting prospect at that, but Dortmund’s reported asking price is excessive when Real Madrid signed Aurelien Tchouameni for £72m in the summer. I don’t think Liverpool will be afford such a deal when their squad is in need of a makeover and it’s a huge investment for United when I think we should be focusing on a new goalkeeper, right-back and centre-forward next summer.

Everything will depend on Ten Hag’s plans for his midfield a year from now. He urged the club to chase Frenkie de Jong for over 100 days in the summer, but had to settle for Casemiro, who is now being kept out of the team by Scott McTominay. A lot can change but I don’t see United spending €150m on Bellingham.

It only sounds like a fair price to pay when you consider that was West Ham’s asking price for Declan Rice.

For Dortmund, they will sit back and do everything they can to raise the player’s price. It is inevitable that Bellingham’s time at BVB is coming to an end and it looks like the Premier League will be his next destination.

Manchester United help Borussia Dortmund with profitable transfers

Jadon Sancho

The English winger joined Dortmund in 2017 from the academy of Manchester City. He won two titles – DFB Pokal and DFB Supercup – during his four years at the club before moving to Manchester United for £76.5m in the summer of 2021. This was a player they signed for a mere £18.53m.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

The Armenia international spent three seasons at Dortmund from 2013 to 2016 before United came in with a big offer. They bought him from Shakhtar Donetsk for £24.75m and sold him for £37.8m.

Shinji Kagawa

A hero in the eyes of the Borussia Dortmund faithful, I remember being gutted because things weren’t working out for him at United. A brilliant player and it will forever be a shame that we didn’t see him at his best in a United shirt. Anyhow, Kagawa spent two seasons at Dortmund, after joining the Bundesliga club as a free agent from Cerezo Osaka. He would later cost United £19.8m.
