Harry Maguire blames communication with De Gea for struggles at United

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire believes that David de Gea’s ‘lack of communication’ have contributed to his struggles.

Although Harry Maguire kept the captain’s armband following Erik ten Hag’s arrival, the England international has lost his place in the team, with Bruno Fernandes taking the captaincy role on a temporary basis in his place.

The 29-year-old has not started a Premier League game since United lost their two first matches of the season, however, it was the 4-0 defeat to Brentford that broke the camel’s back. Ten Hag has selected Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane at centre-back ever since.

According to Mark Ogden of ESPN, Maguire believes De Gea’s lack of communication was a problem for him, while the centre-back also struggled with the keeper’s unwillingness to push higher up the pitch.

Maguire’s struggles at club level have been overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate. The defender was selected for the Three Lions’ squad for their final two fixtures before the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

It will be an almighty task for Maguire to get back into the team at this rate and I don’t think De Gea’s place is safe forever.

  1. let’s be sincere, Maguire is very sluggish, doesn’t have pace,no stamina,no aggression…varane & Martinez are way better than him

  2. I believe with this coming out, we know Maguire is certainly one of the leaks, also you can tell the trust is not there when his is outing one of his team mates for his own shortcomings. Accountability is a tough pill to swallowed, however as captain protecting team mate is a given.

  3. Kick out maguire from our club! Not good enough for man Utd! And shouldn’t even have been mentioned in discussions for the captaincy! Get rid of him!

  4. As a captain and defender when you concede as much as Utd were doing you would be screaming at your team mates to do better and at least try to identify where the issues were but maguire just looks to the skies if he is to get his form back he has to lose the captaincy as he can’t handle the responsibility

  5. Maguire is not good enough.. He can’t even take the blame of his horrible defending he should go and learn from Varane and Lisandro how it’s been done and stop looking for who to blame.

  6. De Gea can and does communicate clearly enough in English. He has enough command of the language to be able to do so.

The big question though… does Maguire ?

  7. Maguire is disgracefull, what a joke of a defender! comunication issues with De Gea… wonder if varane and martinez have the same issues while having clean sheets and winning matches now!
