Graeme Souness backs Harry Maguire to get back into Manchester United team

Harry Maguire started the first two games of the season before he was dropped from the starting line-up. That has not stopped him getting into the England squad and he’s got the public backing of Graeme Souness for what it’s worth…

Former Liverpool midfielder turned pundit, Souness, believes Maguire will return to the United starting XI sooner or later under Erik ten Hag.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Souness said (as quoted by The Sun): “I’m not a big critic of Maguire. I think he’s a very good player and he’s struggled with his partner – whoever he’s had – when playing for Manchester United.

“He’s better than what people would have you believe. Confidence is a big part for players and their ability to play at their peak. Some players need a lot of love, and some can get away with having very little.

“I think he will, ultimately, end up back in the team. There you are.”

I don’t know what games Souness has been watching, but I can’t see Maguire getting a run of games this season unless there are injuries, which seems inevitable when you consider how often we missed Raphael Varane last season.

Even at that, the England international will have to get into the team ahead of Victor Lindelof.

Over the coming days, Maguire has the chance to prove his worth in an England shirt for the last time before the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

The Three Lions will be facing Italy and Germany in the Nations League.
