Erik ten Hag considering Harry Maguire decision ahead of Liverpool clash

Manchester United are back in action on Monday as Erik ten Hag tries to avoid three straight defeats in the Premier League, with losses to Brighton and Brentford ensuring a disastrous start to life at Old Trafford.

United have conceded six goals in their opening two games of the season and thus, there has been an inquest into the defenders at Ten Hag’s disposal.

Summer signing Lisandro Martinez came under heavy scrutiny following the visit to Brentford, with Monday Night Football pundit Jamie Carragher claiming that he cannot succeed at centre-back.

In truth, the Argentine is fairly secure in his position and Harry Maguire, the captain, could lose his place instead. That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, who say that Ten Hag is considering dropping his skipper for Monday’s game against Liverpool.

As per the report, Ten Hag is giving the matter serious consideration and Martinez could instead partner Raphael Varane against Liverpool. The Frenchman played the second half of that disastrous defeat to Brentford.

SN’s verdict…
Earlier this summer, Ten Hag confirmed that Maguire would remain captain this season but confidence in the 29-year-old has already wained if reports are to be believed.

On paper, Martinez and Varane as a partnership sounds most appealing to supporters and Ten Hag would be justified if he gives the pair an audition on Monday night.

For Maguire, his place in the side seems to be diminishing more with each passing week. With the World Cup just around the corner, he will be desperate to keep his place in the side.
