Fabrizio Romano provides update on Juan Mata’s future amid Leeds United rumours

Reports elsewhere have linked free-agent Juan Mata with a move to Leeds United.

I wouldn’t hold anything against the 34-year-old Spaniard, who was a model professional throughout his time at Manchester United but joining Leeds United would be a strange move.

Leeds narrowly escaped relegation last season and they’re renowned as one of our most bitter rivals. Meanwhile, Mata’s contract at Old Trafford expired and he is now available as a free-agent.

According to leading transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Leeds are now currently close to sign Mata. He reports via Twitter: “There’s nothing agreed between Juan Mata and Leeds, despite rumours. He’s appreciated as top professional and person but no talks ongoing as things stand.

“Also links to Real Oviedo are wide off the mark – Mata will make a decision on future soon.”

Although the attacking midfielder is approaching his 35th birthday, it is believed he turned down opportunities in the MLS to remain in Europe.

Mata’s future remains unknown, so Leeds will need to act quickly in order to get in front of the queue – if that is what they plan to do before deadline day.

Let us know in the comments section if you would be annoyed to see Mata represent Leeds next season.
