Ten Hag confirms striker will miss Brighton game with injury

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Anthony Martial will miss the Premier League opener against Brighton on Sunday.

After an impressive pre-season tour – during which he scored three goals, finishing as joint-top scorer with Jadon Sancho – Martial has delivered a blow to Ten Hag as the manager prepares for his first game in the Premier League.

It looked like Martial was going to get his final chance at United this season, but you’d hope that one of the younger players can stand up in his absence. Could that be Alejandro Garnacho?

Martial will now miss the game against Brighton and the manager didn’t give an expected return date.

“Yes,” Ten Hag told reporters, as per the Manchester Evening News. “It is always difficult to say with injuries [how long he will be out for]. I hope it is not for too long.”

When asked if Cristiano Ronaldo will start the game, despite only playing 45 minutes in pre-season, Ten Hag said: “See on Sunday.”

Ten Hag is right not to give too much away but I can’t help but wonder how we will look in attack against Brighton. Will it be Bruno Fernandes in a false nine or will Anthony Elanga start on the flank?

One thing is certain and it’s that we need to get off to a good start this season.
