Erik ten Hag has lost for the first time since taking charge of Manchester United despite an encouraging performance against Atletico Madrid in Oslo.
The Dutchman named a strong side for the 90-minute affair but had to do without Jadon Sancho, who pulled out of the squad after falling ill overnight.
United grabbed a stronghold of the game early on and were unlucky to not go into the half-time break with an advantage. As changes ensued for Diego Simeone’s side, intensity wained and it looked like the game was heading for a dull 0-0 draw.
Joao Felix’s disguised strike five minutes from time was the difference, however. A frantic end to the game ensured Ten Hag’s first defeat but there were plenty of positives.
David de Gea – 6
A couple of good saves but could do nothing for the goal.
Diogo Dalot – 6
Solid performance but offered Felix too much space for the decisive goal.
Harry Maguire – 8
Another confident outing but should have scored in the second half.
Victor Lindelof – 8
Big improvement from his last game against Aston Villa.
Tyrell Malacia – 9
United’s best player. Luke Shaw could be in trouble here.
Fred – 8
Despite the late red card, Fred showed again why Ten Hag is a big fan.
Scott McTominay – 6
Up for a scrap more than anything.
Bruno Fernandes – 6
Involved in the game less than usual.
Anthony Elanga – 6
Another tireless performance but lacked direction. The sharpness isn’t quite there yet.
Marcus Rashford – 7
Impressive first half but influence ebbed over the second half.
Anthony Martial – 6
Probably should’ve opened the scoring after just a couple of minutes. Isolated up front.
Christian Eriksen – 7
Met by a warm welcome in Oslo and his first actions certainly didn’t disappoint. Nearly set up Elanga for the opener and his perfect corner should have been put away by Maguire. Oozed class with every touch.
Donny van de Beek – 6
It was hard to imagine Van de Beek winning a place at United this season and Eriksen’s arrival certainly makes it even harder. His cameo didn’t help the cause.
Facundo Pellistri – N/A
Missed a golden opportunity late on – he didn’t quite catch the ball right after Rashford’s shot was blocked.
