Ashley Young sends demand to former Manchester United team-mate

Former Manchester United star Ashley Young has urged his ex-teammate Anthony Martial to make the No.9 shirt his own after the pair faced each other in pre-season.

Young will remember when Martial joined United as a promising youngster in 2015, but the France international has not gone on to reach the heights many expected.

Under Erik ten Hag, however, it looks like he will be given another chance to lead the line for United which is a surprise after watching him struggle on loan at Sevilla last season.

Many felt this would be Martial’s final summer at United but that no longer seems to be the case after an impressive tour, scoring 3 goals in 4 matches.

In an Instagram post, the Aston Villa veteran full-back wrote: “End of the tour. Thanks Australia we’ve enjoyed nearly every minute. Nice to lead this team again.”

It wasn’t long before Martial replied: “My bro.”

Young followed up with a reply for the United forward, adding: “(It) was good to see you my bro and thanks for your shirt, good luck for the season bro and it’s about time you occupied that No9 shirt.”

Martial, who has had the No.9 squad number since Romelu Lukaku’s departure in 2019, has yet to make it is own.

It looks like he will get the chance to do that next season and his chances to get more game time will only increase if Cristiano Ronaldo departs ahead of transfer deadline day.

A good run of form could see Martial back in the French squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

Let us know if you still believe Martial can reach his full potential at Manchester United in the comments section below.
