Harry Maguire booed at Manchester United vs Crystal Palace pre-season friendly

Harry Maguire was booed by fans at Manchester United vs Crystal Palace. The boos were heard when his named was called out on the PA system and in the earlier stages of the match whenever the centre-back touched the ball.

Even though it is believed to be a minority in the crowd, it was still heard and the only word I can use to describe it is pathetic.

Fans in attendance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground booed Maguire (via Daily Mail) without any good reasons for doing so.

Maguire, like many players at Manchester United, endured an underwhelming campaign last season. Do we just write off the entire squad ahead of a new season rather than admire Erik ten Hag’s willingness to try get the best out of these players?

I mean, this is not FIFA or Football Manager, and he was also hired to work with the current players in the squad.

It has been telling that since becoming manager and getting to know his new players better, Ten Hag has come out publicly to put his faith in Maguire, who has become a scapegoat after an abysmal 2022/23 campaign.

We have already covered Maguire, scapegoating and abuse culture at United on the blog. It’s nothing new because England fans booed him last season, despite the fact he usually plays well for the Three Lions…

Ten Hag has decided Maguire is his captain for next season. Moreover, he has hinted that he’s also a first-choice player in the team, which could spell bad news for Raphael Varane. Let’s get behind our players rather than boo them for childish reasons.

We should note that the skipper had a very good first-half against Palace, with United leading 1-0 at the break.
