Man Utd suffer huge blow as Barcelona name Frenkie de Jong in pre-season squad

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been United’s number one priority this summer and with just three weeks remaining before United kick off their Premier League campaign, a deal is far from materialising.

The Catalan club have reportedly told De Jong of their desire to move him on this summer and on Friday, Barcelona director Mateu Alemany admitted that La Liga rules may force them into a sale.

Barcelona’s pre-season is underway and they leave for their tour of the United States later on Saturday. United fans were eager to find out whether De Jong would be named in the squad for the two-and-a-half week-long camp across the Atlantic and now they have been answered.

De Jong was spotted in training early in the morning and later, he was included in the squad, as seen above, handing a huge blow to United in their pursuit of Erik ten Hag’s number one target.

SN’s verdict…
If there was a deal to be made for De Jong imminently, he would not have been named in Barcelona’s pre-season squad. Clearly, they are still keen on selling him due to his high wages but nothing will get done anytime soon after the latest developments.

Furthermore, De Jong is under no pressure to leave the club as he has several years remaining on his contract. If Barcelona were serious about pushing him out, he would have been left out of the squad.

Evidently, they are fine with the possibility of keeping him for at least another year and we all know that De Jong wants to stay.
