Barcelona tell De Jong to sign for Manchester United

The Frenkie de Jong saga could be reaching an end.

Barcelona have reportedly told Frenkie de Jong he has to leave the club this summer for economic reasons.

According to The Athletic, Barcelona’s hierarchy have already informed the player that they need to sell him to balance their wage bill, which has led to complications in registering their new signings.

United would argue that they wanted to complete a deal for De Jong a long time ago, but it’s a complex situation and I can understand why it has taken until now, with Barcelona owing the player a significant amount of money. This is something we touched on in the latest podcast as Barca try to control the narrative.

Pol Ballus reports: “Barcelona are trying to convince De Jong that a transfer to United would be the best move for his career and while they believe he is a talented player, it has come down to an economically related decision rather than a sporting one.”

It is also suggested that there is uncertainty over whether De Jong will travel with the Barcelona squad to the US for their pre-season tour. I hope he gets on a flight to Australia instead.
