Manchester United have received a massive boost in their pursuit of Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.

That’s according to a recent report from TalkSPORT, who claim the Dutch champions have given the Red Devils the green light to continue in their efforts to sign Martinez.

Although the 20-time league winners are spending a lot of time trying to convince Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie De Jong, to come to Old Trafford, it is clear that Erik ten Hag also views Martinez as an important target too.

It is understandable why the Dutch tactician is so keen to be reunited with his former number 21. The Argentina international is incredibly versatile and can play in a number of different defensive positions, including as a defensive midfielder.

The traditional number four role is a position United have struggled with for several seasons, so should the club agree terms with Martinez and he ends up signing, fans can probably expect to see the tenacious Argentine positioned just in front of a more familiar back four.
