Fabrizio Romano confirms Man Utd are hijacking deal to sign Dutch defender

Erik ten Hag has laid out his targets for this summer and unsurprisingly, there has been a spike in reports linking the club to Dutch players.

Frenkie de Jong, the Barcelona midfielder, remains the club’s prime target to revamp Ten Hag’s midfield but there is also willingness to sign a defender and striker.

Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia has emerged as one of the players Ten Hag would like to bring with him from the Eredivisie, and it’s now looking like some groundwork to sign the Dutch international has been made.

The 22-year-old was believed to be closing in on a move to Olympique Lyon but according to Fabrizio Romano, the journalist and transfer expert, United are now hijacking that deal.

As per the Italian reporter, there was a full verbal agreement between Feyenoord and Lyon but United are now in talks with the Dutch club as they aim to reach an agreement for his transfer. Interestingly enough, Malacia shares an agent with De Jong, who United have been in talks over for several weeks.

The proposal made by the Old Trafford club is believed to be in the region of €15m plus add-ons, with the club now waiting for communication from the player’s camp.

SN’s verdict…
A left-back looked to be low on Ten Hag’s list of priorities this summer but with Luke Shaw entering the final 12 months of his contract and Alex Telles looking increasingly unlikely to remain at the club, plans to strengthen that area could have been brought forward.

Malacia is a regular for both club and country and Ten Hag knows him well. It remains to be seen whether the deal is completed or not but one thing’s for sure – United fans will be happy to see that some work is being done in this transfer window.
